  1. Take the digit(s) before the 5

Example: 35² → 3 × 4 = 12, append 25 → 1225 Example: 85² → 8 × 9 = 72, append 25 → 7225

Multiplying Numbers Near 100

For numbers close to 100:

  1. Find the difference from 100 for each number
  2. Cross-add (or cross-subtract)
  3. Multiply the differences

Example: 97 × 96 → Differences: -3, -4 → 97-4 = 93 (first two digits) → 3×4 = 12 (last two digits) → 9312

Checking Answers with Digital Roots

Sum all digits of a number until you get a single digit. If A × B = C, then digitalRoot(A) × digitalRoot(B) should equal digitalRoot(C). Quick way to verify multiplication without redoing the calculation.

LCM and HCF Shortcuts

Finding LCM using the formula: LCM(a,b) = (a × b) / HCF(a,b). If you can spot the HCF quickly (e.g., both even → at least 2), you can find LCM faster than listing multiples.
